FIRST Tech Challenge - Youth Volunteer Roles

Individuals must be in grades 9-12 to apply to volunteer with 
High Tech Kids, we are unable to accommodate request 
for younger students to volunteer due to liability.

All volunteer schedules are pre-scheduled through the High Tech Kids 
Volunteer Coordinator and our Tournament Directors. We are not able to 
accommodate volunteers who arrive at tournaments 
without prior communication with us.

Students must have transportation to the tournament and 
be committed to their volunteer role for the entirety of the shift.

Shift times are listed below each volunteer position.    

 

Field Technical Advisor Assistant (FTAA)

Assist the Field Technical Advisor to resolve technical problems that arise during the competition. Attention to detail and willingness to assist is necessary. This role is a great opportunity to train as a Field Technical Advisor.

 Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

 

Field Control System (FCS) Operator

Assist the Field Technical Advisor with the Field Control System. Attention to detail and willingness to assist when a technical problem is necessary. This role is a great opportunity to train as a Field Technical Advisor.

 

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

 

Scorekeeper Assistant

Assisting the Scorekeeper, this individual meticulously records and tracks teams success as they compete during the day. The FIRST Tech Challenge scorekeeping software displays the outcomes of each match, along with rolling overall results and team standings.

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm.

 

Field Resetters

Assist Referees after each alliance match to reset the competition field and serve as an extra set of eyes for the referees.  This role requires individuals to have an understanding of the game rules and how the starting location of all components on the field.

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:30am – 5:30 pm.

 

Queuers and Runners

During the tournament, teams are completing a series of alliance matches. Volunteers ensure teams are cued and ready for the next match. These individuals assist referees to manage the transition of teams in and out of alliance matches.

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

 

Emcees

Interact with teams as you introduce them and call the play by play during team’s robot performance rounds. You will be provided all the information you need at training, previous experience with FIRST LEGO League is required. Keep an upbeat and positive tempo and offer encouragement in a fun, energy-charged gymnasium!

Merchandise Sales and Information Desk

Handle the sales of High Tech Kids (HTK) merchandise during tournaments. The profits from these sales supports HTK mission to offer the FIRST® LEGO® League and the FIRST® Tech Challenge programs throughout MN. This role requires communication with the public, ability to accurately count change and a familiarity with FIRST programs, as many seek information about the event from individuals behind the merchandise table.

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

 

Check-in

Teams complete their session with a panel of judges and robot inspections, before the alliance selection begins. Volunteers confirm that teams have arrived at judging or robot inspections and serve as a runner to find missing teams. The Head Judge or Robot Inspections may assign additional tasks to this individual to improve these processes.

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 7:30 am – 10:30 am.

 

Set-up and Tear-down

Regional Tournaments are typically hosted in schools across the Twins Cities Metro. Set-up occurs Friday evenings before the tournament weekend and typically starts when the school day has ended. Tear-down begins immediately after the last tournament for the weekend.

Volunteer minimum commitment of 2 hours during set-up or tear-down of a tournament.
