FIRST Tech Challenge - Adult Volunteer Roles

Individuals must be at least 18 years old 
and have graduated high school to serve in these roles

We also have youth volunteer roles available.

All volunteers are pre-scheduled through the High Tech Kids 
Volunteer Coordinator. We are not able to 
accommodate volunteers who arrive at tournaments 
without prior communication with us.

Individuals must have transportation to the tournament and 
be committed to their volunteer role for the entirety of the shift. 
Approximate time commitments are listed below each volunteer position.     

*Funny hats are highly encouraged, but optional!

 

Trained Officials:
 
Field Technical Advisor (FTA)

Responsible for managing the technical components that are used during the alliance matches. This individual must be able to problem solve technical issues with the WiFi wireless connection between the robots and the Field Control System on a computer.

Volunteer minimum commitment of two days; Friday night set-up lasting 3-4 hours and tournament day (Saturday or Sunday) from 7:30 am – 6:30 pm.
 
Judge

Judge teams on how they designed their robot, impacted their community through service and outreach, and inspired others through their perseverance and excellence during the season. Interact and provide encouragement and give feedback to kids in a quiet classroom atmosphere!

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 7:30 am – 5:00 pm.
 
Referee
Officiate during the robot performance matches. Each match runs 2.5 minute and includes four robots in alliance format. Complete score sheets, ensure teams follow rules and offer encouragement in a fun, energy-charged gymnasium!

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

 

Inspectors – Hardware or Software

Evaluate the team’s robot to ensure it is safe to operate while competing at the tournament. Teams are given safety guidelines and provide a Bill of Materials to inspectors. Loose batteries, sharp edges and faulty wiring are a few things to look for in this volunteer role.

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 7:30 am – 10:30 am.

 

Scorekeeper

This individual meticulously records and tracks teams success as they compete during the day. The FIRST Tech Challenge scorekeeping software displays the outcomes of each match, along with rolling overall results and team standings.

Volunteer minimum commitment of two days; Friday night set-up lasting 1-2 hours and tournament day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm

 
Additional Roles:
 

Field Manager

Coordinates the competition floor including; team traffic flow, referees, emcee, FTA, scorekeeper, etc.. Maintain smooth flow of matches and pace to keep the tournament on schedule.

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

 

Lead Queuer

During the tournament, teams are completing a series of alliance matches. This individual ensures teams are cued and ready for the next match, leading a couple of youth volunteer queuers to manage the transition of teams in and out of alliance matches.

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

 

Emcees & Game Announcer

Interact with teams as you introduce them and call the play by play during team’s robot performance rounds. Previous experience with FIRST Tech Challenge is preferred. Keep an upbeat and positive tempo and offer encouragement in a fun, energy-charged gymnasium!

Set-up and Tear-down

Set-up occurs Friday evenings before the tournament weekend and typically starts when the school day has ended. Tear-down begins immediately after the last tournament for the weekend.

Volunteer minimum commitment of 2 hours during set-up or tear-down of a tournament.
