FIRST LEGO League - Adult Volunteer Roles

Individuals must be at least 18 years old and
have graduated high school to serve as a judge or referee
.
We also have youth volunteer roles available.

All volunteers are pre-scheduled through the High Tech Kids Volunteer Coordinator and Tournament Directors. We are not able to accommodate volunteers who arrive at tournaments without prior communication with us.

Individuals must have transportation to the event and be committed to their volunteer role for the entirety of their shift. Approximate time commitments are listed below each volunteer position.

Trained Officials:
       

Judge

Judge teams in research, teamwork, robot design or programming. You will be provided all of the information you need at training and no previous experience is necessary. Interact and provide encouragement and feedback to kids in a quiet classroom atmosphere! Judges must be 19 years old.

Volunteer commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 8:00 am – 3:30 pm.

Referee

Officiate during the robot performance rounds: each team runs three 2.5 minute matches. No technical expertise or previous experience needed. Complete score sheets, ensure teams follow rules and offer encouragement in a fun, energy-charged gymnasium! Referees 17 or 18 years old are eligible for this role, with previous FIRST LEGO League participation.

Funny hats optional, but highly encouraged!

Volunteer commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 am – 5:00pm.

 

Tournament Scoring Coordinator

Each tournament requires one person to run the scoring software and generate reports for the head judge. We will provide training to set up the computer equipment prior to your first solo tournament. Volunteer commitment of two days; Friday night set-up lasting 1-2 hours and
tournament day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

 
Additional Roles:
 

Emcees

Interact with teams as you introduce them and call the play by play during team’s robot performance rounds. Previous experience with FIRST LEGO League is preferred. Keep an upbeat and positive tempo and offer encouragement in a fun, energy-charged gymnasium!

Volunteer minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

 

Computer Assistant

Assisting the Tournament Scoring Coordinator entering robot performance scores, this position is primarily a data entry position.

Tournament Directors

Coordinate Regional Tournament logistics and facilitate the communication between High Tech Kids and the tournament locations. These individuals have previously volunteered with our organization in any of the above positions. See our information for Tournament Directors.

Volunteer commitment begins 2-3 months prior to the tournament date with increasing time commitments during the weeks prior to the tournament.

 

Set-up and Tear-down

Set-up occurs Friday evenings before the tournament weekend and typically starts when the school day has ended. Tear-down begins immediately after the last tournament for the weekend.

Volunteer minimum commitment of 2 hours during set-up on Friday or
tear-down on Sunday of a tournament.
